There are few albums that capture a time as well as Third Eye Blind's self-titled album (1997). Listening to this album is like listening to a cultural summary of the 90s (there's even a song called "Burning Man"). Every single cut on this album is well-written and inspired. It's difficult for me to look at the 90s and pull out stand-out albums because of the record company formulaic production of singles rather than albums. Album after album became a deep disappointment. Then I remember listening to Third Eye Blind and having a stroke over the continuity and quality of the songs. This is an album is an underrated rock achievement of the 90s. I understand it is currently platinum six times. However, like anything popular, you have to go forget the reality shows and antics of the band members and really listen to this album.
The greatness of this album led me to be disappointed with their follow-up effort, Blue. I wanted so much more and it fell flat. Looking back, I realized they set an amazingly high bar for a debut record.
Naturally, "Semi-Charmed Life" is the standout song. But don't forget the bottled emotion contained in "Losing a Whole Year", "Jumper", and "Good for You". Stephan Jenkins' clean and simple vocals are perfect for the angst, fear, and trouble expressed in many of the songs. He nails the high notes and never over reaches. Kevin Cadogan's guitar work adds a complexity to seemingly simple songs and ensure each song becomes an earworm. All songs were written by Jenkins and Cadogan. Cadogan departed the band after the Blue album and under negative circumstances, possibly explaining why the band hasn't come close to their self-titled debut album.
So why don't you step back from that ledge my friend and listen to Third Eye Blind again with fresh ears?
