Learning About Wireless from Kobe's Defense Team

There's an interesting twist in the Kobe Bryant trial: SMS Could Save Kobe Bryant.

A judge on Thursday ordered text messages from the cell phone of a former boyfriend of the woman who accuses basketball star Kobe Bryant of rape to be turned over to the court, and said vital DNA samples should be retested.

I will take this opportunity to remind everyone of this fact: if it's wireless, it's not secure. Wireless technology is so pervasive in this society, most people have a false sense of security. Wireless is freedom and convenience. It's wireless technology that let's us talk to distant relatives from the toilet and annoy fellow commuters on the train and obliviously force other drivers onto the shoulder. However, nothing about wireless makes it secure–even the security features.

Paranoia is a good thing when it comes to wireless technology. Start thinking before you use a cordless phone, your cell phone, and even a wireless network. As soon as you transmit over the air, any technically savvy individual can intercept that broadcast. Now, I'm not saying this for criminals and terrorists–you guys go ahead and continue to use cell phones. But think about cases where individuals have had their identities stolen because they gave out personal information on a cordless phone. A few well-worded Google searches and one trip to Radio Shack can give anybody the ability to intercept cordless and cellular phone broadcasts.

Are you conducting financial business over wireless? Are you gossiping about your neighbors using a cordless phone? Think before you use wireless.
