Sorry to be like an Internet stalker, but I wanted to point out that you missed the all time best presentation, by one Erin McKean. After watching her TED presentation again and again, I was expecting greatness, and she delivered. Her personality is captivating, and makes the study of the English language come alive with excitement.

For me the presentations went downhill from there. After all, STC is known for the three-ring binder types with horn-rimmed glasses. All facts and none of the pizzazz. The only presentation that didn't seem like classic STC was Don Moyer's Building Visual Explanations on the last day.

For those who want to view the classy young @whitneyhess, watch the following interview video: http://www.idratherbewriting.com/2010/05/09/old-guard-versus-new-guard-whitney-hess-at-the-stc-summit-in-dallas/

I like the way she thinks. Plus, I helped Tom to film it, so any camera angle issues are all mine. ;-)

Great summary! The behavior you describe at Whitney Hess' presentation horrifies me. She sounds like all the people I hang out with - am honored to hang out with - in Denmark. Sounds like a presentation I would have loved. I can also sympathize. Took a class where I presented a paper using Presentation Zen-type slides. I pretty much bombed. Didn't go over well with the gray-haired professor (and I have gray hair!) He admitted he had never seen anything like that before.
Doesn't matter if they don't post her second preso due to - uh - words. We have the interwebz! ;)
People should realize - we NEED rising stars! That gives us hope for the future. Sounds like she was the medicine the doc ordered.
