It's time for a
Retro Record Review
I have a closet full of CDs and DVDs. I'm kind of an entertainment pack rat. As I was getting ready to cut the grass today, I went in the closet and looked for something to both fit my mood and be something I haven't heard in a while. I pulled out Shelter by Lone Justice. This is one of the best albums I own. I remember buying the cassette version of Shelter and subsequently wearing it out. I later bought the CD when it was first issued.
The lead singer, Maria McKee, is one of the best female vocalists I've heard. Her intense vocal performances on the album are moving and demonstrate her entire range and abilities. McKee went on to release several excellent solo albums over the years. For a discography, check out www.mariamckee.com and read about her current projects. At the same time, you should visit Barking Stars to read some of the history of Lone Justice.
Barking Stars describes the turmoil Lone Justice was in as the band was broken up and reformed with all new players except McKee. Many McKee fans think the first self-titled Lone Justice album was better than Shelter, citing criticisms like over-production and a departure from their cowboy punk roots. I like both albums, but Shelter is one of those albums that brings back memories and feelings from that time. The album's well-crafted music with spiritually uplifting lyrics is upbeat and thoughtful. If you don't own it, give a listen. You'll be glad you did.
Now what other stuff can I pull from my closet?
