- Cover of Spilt Milk
What happens when They Might Be Giants knocks up Queen and they have a precocious and gifted child? You might have something close to Jellyfish, a short-lived alternative band with only two albums under their belt before they broke up. Jellyfish's second album, Spilt Milk (1993) is worth seeking out and studying as today's School of Rock entry.
There are albums that come naturally to bands. Many great albums were recorded in a few days and have a raw sound that shows off natural talent. This is not one of those albums. Spilt Milk is like a well-crafted musical, full of intricacies and musical depth rarely heard in most modern music. They are obviously Queen fans and you will recognize that influence as soon as you hear "Joining a Fan Club", which was the standout single that received some airplay.
However, the whole album was a performance Jellyfish made just for you. You need to listen to it from beginning to end, but you are allowed to applaud between tracks. This is exactly how you put an album together.
