92: Faith No More – Album of the Year

by mkanderson on Dec 16, 2009

The problem with bands like Faith No More and lists like these is that I could easily put every one of their albums. In my own personal School of Rock, I would need a class devoted to Faith No More's influence on modern rock. I constantly hear them in new songs. From song structure to lyrics to vocals, Faith No More made their own path in rock. With that said, I'll refrain from simply telling you to listen to them all. Instead, I'll put a couple on this list starting with Faith No More's Album of the Year (1997).

Album of the Year was their last studio album and one of their best. Every song on this album is outstanding and, as I discovered, upon the failure of your car's CD player this is the CD you want stuck in there. "Collision" opens the album and the style is Faith No More's trademarked thrashing guitars with Mike Patton's voice soaring above them. From there it just gets better.

"Naked in Front of the Computer" was later covered by Papa Roach. Like all covers I've heard of Faith No More, it doesn't do it justice. My favorite track on the album is "Mouth to Mouth", which contains crazy circus keyboards and lyrics about dressing up a dead man. You have got to love these guys.

Faith No More is doing some limited touring now and  considering a new studio album.
